Components Related to Math Common Core Standard

Math is one of the Common Core California State standards required when teaching. The grade level I teach is K5 Special education. The subject area for this unit I will be focusing on is math at 3rd grade level. I chose this standard to develop this unit lesson plan because not only is teaching math required in the state, as well as at my school, but because I am currently teaching math, and wanted to develop new lesson plans.


Math Common Core Standards are designed to Prepare students to graduate from high school and enter college and be prepared to join the workforce. These standards for math include eight mathematical practice standards. The eight mathematical practice standards include: 1. Make sense of problems and persevere  in solving them 2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively 3. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others 4. Model with mathematics 5. Use appropriate tools strategically 6. Attend to precision 7. Look for and make use of structure 8. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning. These standards are a balanced combination of procedures and understanding. As I have only four students in my special education class, three students are in 3rd grade. For this grade level, students are expected to know operations and algebraic thinking, practice numbers and operations in base ten, numbers and operations of fractions,  practice measurement and data, as well as geometry.

I will be focusing on 3rd grade level instruction for this math common core standards example. For this lesson plan activity, the objective is to get students to use place value to read numbers from left to right. By the end of this activity lesson, students should be able when writing numbers to first determine the place value of the first digit, and then write the number. Student’s will also be able to write the value of numbers according to their place value. Lastly, students will be able to express integers through place value.


For this class activity, I will write on the board a problem about a man named John who decided to count what grew in his garden. We will begin by counting as a class single digit numbers, two digit numbers, three digit numbers, four digit numbers, five digit numbers, and six digit numbers. Lastly, as a class we will begin writing numbers by determining the place value of the first digit, and then writing the rest of the numbers accordingly. By using place value to read numbers from left to right, students will be able to correctly write letters.



Three assessments that will help determine what students have learned in this u it include class discussions to analyze place value, a quiz at the end of the lesson, and informal checks for understanding.  Because place value can be conducted in every day math, checks for understanding can be given throughout the day. Other ways to check for understanding of material learned in this lesson include observations, and academic questions.


Three learning experiences and activities I would use to help students develop the knowledge and skills to meet this math standard include independent review. With independent review, each student will have a worksheet with place value problems, and will have to solve the problem by answering the correct  multiple choice answer. This independent review can be done in class, or at home for homework. Another learning activity would be partner/group work, as students can quiz each other on place value. This will not only bring about discussions about the math work, but it also helps develop social skills, as well as makes students accountable. Lastly, by doing end of lesson review, students can recount what they learned in the lesson, which will help keep the activities fresh in their heads.
