Objective Assessments

Objective Assessments

Teaching K5 Special Education is rewarding to see how much students can learn after a lesson unit. For the lesson unit I planned for my K5 Special education class,  I designed a place value lesson unit based off of the California Common Core State standards.

I will be focusing on 3rd grade level instruction for this math common core standards objective example. For this lesson plan activity, the objective is to get students to use place value to read numbers from left to right. By the end of this activity lesson, as measured by assessments, students should be able when writing numbers to first determine the place value of the first digit, and then write the number. Student’s will also be able to write the value of numbers according to their place value. Lastly, students will be able to express integers through place value. This unit has a time frame of three weeks, with daily practice , and assessments at the end of each weeks, in order to follow standards by the time State testing begins.

For this class activity, I will write on the board a problem about a man named John who decided to count what grew in his garden. We will begin by counting as a class single digit numbers, two digit numbers, three digit numbers, four digit numbers, five digit numbers, and six digit numbers. Lastly, as a class we will begin writing numbers by determining the place value of the first digit, and then writing the rest of the numbers accordingly. By using place value to read numbers from left to right, students will be able to correctly write letters by this end of this activity as measured by teacher observation.

Formal assessments given throughout this unit will check for understanding of students knowledge gained throughout this unit. The assessments are as follows:

These assessments can be given prior to the start of the unit as well, to test the knowledge comprehension of what students already know. To track the students progress, students should be getting no less than 70% correct. Another assessment can be seen below:

Formative place value assessments can also be used as exit tickets at the end of the unit lesson. These assessments allow the student to show what they know from the lesson unit that they learned. By using these formative assessments, the material will be fresh in the minds. An example of a formative assessment is as follows:
